Citrus Memorial Health System, a not-for-profit community hospital, is now part of HCA West Florida. Citrus Memorial has a 50-year lease with HCA, which went into effect Nov. 1, according to a news release. The addition of Citrus Memorial brings HCA’s hospital total to 17; it’s the largest for-profit health care system in Florida.

The addition of Citrus Memorial comes less than two months after HCA announced that it would close a hospital in the Tampa Bay area, 38-year-old Edward White Hospital in St. Petersburg.

Originally founded in December 2006 as an independent grassroots publication dedicated to coverage of health issues in Florida, Health News Florida was acquired by WUSF Public Media in September 2012.
