Holidays Time to Spot Alzheimer’s Symptoms

Alzheimer’s disease, the most common form of dementia, affects about 5.1 million Americans, many of whom live alone.  The disease, which typically takes eight to twelve years to progress, destroys memory and cognitive skills, eventually leading to a vegetative state.  This is where a proactive family and the holidays come in, according to the Miami Herald.  If an individual detects changes in a family member’s health - either physical or cognitive - especially in older relatives, this may be the beginnings of Alzheimer’s, and time to seek medical assistance.

Originally founded in December 2006 as an independent grassroots publication dedicated to coverage of health issues in Florida, Health News Florida was acquired by WUSF Public Media in September 2012.
