More kids aged 5 to 10 get arrested in Orange and Osceola Counties than any other county in Florida. That’s according to public defender Robert Wesley, who says more of those arrests are happening during the school year than in the summer months.

Accidental deaths from drug use is up 26 percent in Orange and Osceola counties, according to the medical examiner’s office.

Heroin overtook cocaine as the deadliest street drug last year. Heroin was found in 89 deaths in Orange and Osceola counties last year, that’s compared to 19 heroin-related deaths in 2011.

Cocaine was a close second, with 88 deaths, and was often used in combination with other drugs. That’s an 89 percent increase from 2012.

Central Florida health officials have confirmed another flu-related death, according to the Orlando Sentinel.

The 63-year-old diabetic woman who died Wednesday is the third patient in Brevard County this year to succumb to the H1N1 strain of the virus.

 Two more flu-related deaths have been reported in Orange County, the Orlando Sentinel reports. The most recent deaths include a child and a 54-year-old woman who worked in the auditing department at Florida Hospital.

    

The woman, Mary Lamb, had the H1N1 strain of the flu and spent 18 days on a respirator before dying, her husband said. That strain also has been linked to the deaths of two women in their 30s in Brevard County.

Florida Hospital Apopka is planning to double the number of beds by moving, the Orlando Sentinel reports. The project will require approval by the state. As the Sentinel reports, this plan by Adventist Health System/Sunbelt Inc. shows the increased competition with Orlando Health-owned Health Central for patients in west Orange County.

Deaths from domestic violence have risen so sharply that Orange County is bringing back a special panel to look at cracks in the system that might be contributing to the increase.

Movements in Orange and Miami-Dade counties to pass local measures requiring employers to offer paid sick leave to their workers may be pre-empted by Republicans who intend to pass legislation to bar such local actions.
