Baptist Health Elective Surgery Resumes At 40% of Usual Volume

As it neared the end of the first week resuming elective surgeries, Baptist Health COO Matt Zuino said May 7 the hospital is operating at 40% of its usual volume.

Barbara Lumpkin, who spent more than four decades advocating for nurses in Tallahassee and had her name affixed to a 2016 law, died Thursday, according to a statement issued by the Florida Hospital Association. She was 81.

The Ohio native received a nursing degree in 1958 and spent 16 years as a clinical nurse before moving to Florida in 1974 to work for the Florida Nurses Association.

She joined Baptist Health South Florida in 2007.

Baptist Health South Florida lost $94.2 million for the fiscal year that ended in September, the South Florida Business Journal reports. The non-profit health system was hurt by losses on investments and higher costs for supplies, malpractice and insurance, according to the Business Journal.

According to the Miami Herald, Baptist Health South Florida is enjoying tax exempt-status and raking in millions as it makes its network unavailable to many low- and middle-income patients.

South Florida’s Baptist Health hospital network is moving into Palm Beach County with the acquisition of two Bethesda Health hospitals in Boynton Beach, the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports.

Up to 100,000 patients remain in limbo following Humana’s announcement that it would no longer include Baptist Health South Florida hospitals in its provider network, the Miami Herald reports. Baptist Health is the largest healthcare provider in the region, boasting seven hospitals in Miami-Dade and Monroe counties and more than 30 outpatient facilities in Miami-Dade and Broward.

Florida Hospital Apopka is planning to double the number of beds by moving, the Orlando Sentinel reports. The project will require approval by the state. As the Sentinel reports, this plan by Adventist Health System/Sunbelt Inc. shows the increased competition with Orlando Health-owned Health Central for patients in west Orange County.

Two weeks ago four members of the staff at Pensacola’s Baptist Health Care went boating, and nothing has been the same since, the Pensacola News Journal reports.

While the four were swimming, CFO Kerry Vermillion, owner of the boat, disappeared; his body was later found. The exact cause of death is undetermined and autopsy reports are not expected for another 12 to 14 weeks.
