According to the Miami Herald, Baptist Health South Florida is enjoying tax exempt-status and raking in millions as it makes its network unavailable to many low- and middle-income patients.

Most of the health plans sold on in Miami-Dade County don’t include Baptist’s vast network, the Herald reports. And it accepts two of the county’s nine Medicaid plans, meaning about 400,000 in Miami-Dade are shut out of the network, according to the Herald.

Originally founded in December 2006 as an independent grassroots publication dedicated to coverage of health issues in Florida, Health News Florida was acquired by WUSF Public Media in September 2012.
