Tampa General Hospital and Florida Hospital are partnering to build a $60-million “healthplex,” start a home care agency and offer hospice care, the Tampa Bay Times reports.

The "West Florida Health" partnership -- which officials from the nonprofits say is not a merger -- first announced plans to work together in 2013. This move is a response of sorts to competition from the larger BayCare Health System, the Times reports.

Meanwhile, at a forum last week in South Florida, Broward County hospital leaders predicted more mergers and consolidation, the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports. The new president and CEO of Broward Health, pointing to under-used facilities, called mergers “inevitable.”

Originally founded in December 2006 as an independent grassroots publication dedicated to coverage of health issues in Florida, Health News Florida was acquired by WUSF Public Media in September 2012.
