Billionaire Backs Fight Against Pot

A group opposing the amendment that would legalize medical marijuana in Florida just got a $2.5 million boost, News Service of Florida reports. Sheldon Adelson, a Las Vegas casino owner and supporter of Gov. Rick Scott, donated the money to the Drug Free Florida Committee. That committee had only raised $100,000 in May.

The Florida Sheriff’s Association, led by Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd, is active in the “Don’t Let Florida Go to Pot” coalition. Judd called the amendment “a wolf in sheep’s clothing,” and says it will give marijuana access to all Floridians, not just the sick patients whom backers of the amendment say will be helped.

Originally founded in December 2006 as an independent grassroots publication dedicated to coverage of health issues in Florida, Health News Florida was acquired by WUSF Public Media in September 2012.
