Senate Pitches Health Care Alternative For Veterans

A state Senate proposal would authorize Florida to begin negotiations with the federal government to see if the state could offer managed health-care programs to veterans and their families as an alternative to the health system provided by the federal Veterans Administration.

The Veterans Administration got $2.5 billion to add more doctors, nurses and other staff. An NPR investigation finds that total staff didn't rise much more than it might have without that money. We examine reasons why it's hard to bring new medical personnel into the VA, including a cumbersome hiring process.

The head of the Veterans Administration is in Orlando today to dedicate the new VA hospital in Lake Nona. VA Secretary Bob McDonald will be the keynote speaker at an event, which will include elected officials.

The $620 million dollar facility broke ground seven years ago, and has been plagued with delays. The clinic began seeing patients in February, and the hospital will continue opening in phases through the rest of 2015.

Navy veteran Tom Pokorski said the new facility is an improvement over the VA clinic at Lake Baldwin, which is old and over-crowded.

Two surveyors from the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration were denied access to records and escorted out of the VA  Medical Center in Riviera Beach on Thursday when they tried to inspect it,  the Palm Beach Post reported.

Consultant Paul Gionfriddo, at his site Our Health Policy Matters, writes about a new Veterans Administration study that shows the Middle East wars have had an enormous impact on soldiers' mental health.

The VA study reveals that more than half of returning veterans since 2001 who sought medical care through the VA system were diagnosed with mental disorders.
