A Miami doctor has been sentenced to nine years in federal prison for his role in a $30 million Medicare fraud scheme.
Federal prosecutors said Monday that 51-year-old Dr. Henry Lora also was ordered to pay more than $30 million in restitution to the government. He pleaded guilty in February to health care fraud conspiracy and other charges.
Lora was formerly the medical director of Merfi Corp. a Miami-area clinic. In his plea agreement, Lora admitted that in exchange for kickbacks and bribes, he and others wrote prescriptions for home health care and other services for Medicare beneficiaries that were not medically necessary or not provided. They also falsified patient records.
Former Merfi owner Isabel Medina was previously was sentenced to nine years in prison.
