Broward Ponders Voluntary Gun Control

Broward County commissioners can’t regulate guns in their county, but might create a voluntary program to control sales, the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports.

A 2011 state law bans local governments from regulating guns. But under Broward’s proposed program, vendors who sell to both law enforcement agencies and the public would be asked to follow voluntary safeguards, including the running of background checks, the Sun Sentinel reports.  Broward already is being sued by Florida Carry for having gun restrictions that are tougher than the state’s laws.  The Broward proposal has also gotten the attention of Miami-based Arms with Ethics.

Originally founded in December 2006 as an independent grassroots publication dedicated to coverage of health issues in Florida, Health News Florida was acquired by WUSF Public Media in September 2012.
