The second-largest donor to United for Care, the group behind the push that got the issue of legalizing medical marijuana on the ballot for November 2014, is an heir to the fortune amassed by a dermatology company.
The Broward Palm Beach New Times reports Barbara Stiefel was left with $120 million after her family sold the Stiefel Medicinal Soap Co. She has given about $300,000 to United for Care; during the last presidential campaign, the Coral Gables resident donated $1 million to a pro-Obama PAC.
Stiefel is not keen on giving interviews; reporting by the Tampa Bay Times reveals some of her family members have died from cancer.
