A Senate Republican on Thursday filed a proposal that would create a sales-tax exemption on the sale of feminine hygiene products — part of a broader move in states to end what has become known as the "tampon tax."
Sen. Kathleen Passidomo, R-Naples, filed the proposal (SB 176) for consideration during the 2017 legislative session, which starts in March. It is nearly identical to a House bill filed last month by Rep. Katie Edwards, D-Plantation.
The bills, which would take effect Jan. 1, 2018, call for a tax exemption on the sales of products such as tampons, sanitary napkins and panty liners. Similar proposals have moved forward in other states.
