Hospitals To Expand, Partner

UF Health Shands Hospital is moving forward on a $415 million planned expansion, the Gainesville Sun reports.

The new building will include 216 beds, 20 operating rooms, and two towers that will house neuromedicine and cardiovascular services, according to the Sun.

Meanwhile, Jacksonville's Baptist Health announced on Wednesday that it intends to become the third member of the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Network, the Florida Times-Union reports. The partnership will lead to recruitment of new staff, training of current staff, and ultimately new facilities and equipment at the five-hospital network in Northeast Florida, according to the Times-Union.

Earlier this year, Orlando Health and MD Anderson ended a similar partnership in Central Florida.

Originally founded in December 2006 as an independent grassroots publication dedicated to coverage of health issues in Florida, Health News Florida was acquired by WUSF Public Media in September 2012.
