Disabled From Abuse, Boy Abandoned in Nursing Home
Miami Herald reporter Carol Marbin Miller explains the sad and complex situation faced by disabled children in institutions through the story of Anubis Day, who was left blind and on a ventilator after his father's alleged violent abuse.
The U.S. Justice Department has been pressuring Florida to get disabled children out of institutions by providing nursing assistance that would enable them to go home or to foster care. But the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration has argued that the children's parents want them to stay in nursing homes.
Many are like Anubis: essentially abandoned.
Miller also details the events in a day in the life of a children's home, based on an AHCA inspection.
