That's according to the annual report from the Medical Examiners Commission. It tracks autopsies and causes of death throughout Florida.

Two suicides in the span of a week involving student survivors of the Parkland school shooting have sparked a new question at the Florida Capitol: How much mental-health money should the state provide to schools? 

For the second time in three years, life expectancy in the U.S. has ticked downward. In three reports issued Thursday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention laid out a series of statistics that revealed some troubling trend lines — including rapidly increasing rates of death from drug overdoses and suicide.

CDC Director Robert Redfield described the data as "troubling."

When Dorothy Paugh was 9, her father bought a pistol and started talking openly about ending his life. Her mother was terrified but didn't know what to do.

"She called our priest and called his best friend," Paugh recalled. "They came and talked to him, and they didn't ask to take his gun away."

Her father was 51 when he shot himself to death.

A Florida gun-shop chain that has eight target-shooting ranges has stopped renting firearms following a rash of suicides. Khaled Akkawi, founder of Shoot Straight, made the decision after the latest suicide, the Orlando Sentinel reports.
