The Southeastern Conference cleared Saban on Saturday to coach in the game after he tested negative for COVID-19 the past three days. The move came hours ahead of Saturday night’s game between the second-ranked Crimson Tide and No. 3 Bulldogs. Alabama won, 41-24.  Saban had initially tested positive on Wednesday, along with athletic director Greg Byrne.

University of Florida football coach Dan Mullen, who last week wanted 90,000 fans packed inside Ben Hill Griffin Stadium amid a pandemic, says he has tested positive for COVID-19.

Mullen made the announcement Saturday on Twitter, saying his initial positive result was confirmed by a second test. The Gators had at least 21 players and coaches test positive earlier in the week, an outbreak that prompted the Southeastern Conference to postpone Florida’s next two games.

Former Florida State University and hall of fame football coach Bobby Bowden says he’s tested positive for the coronavirus. The 91-year-old has told other media outlets he believes he contracted the virus during a recent hospital stay over a leg infection.

Bowden tested positive for the virus last week and is planning to be tested again. He told the Tallahassee Democrat that he doesn’t have much energy but is otherwise feeling okay.

Bowden retired from FSU in 2009. He won two national championships and a dozen division titles.

Evans High School’s football team has reported five positive coronavirus tests, and its Thursday game against West Orange High School has been canceled, the Orange County school district said.

A day after the Tampa Bay Buccaneers announced they would play their first two games in Raymond James Stadium without spectators, Gov. Ron DeSantis urged the team to allow fans to attend.

“If the Bucs had fans, I would try to go to the first home game. I would,” DeSantis said during a Thursday roundtable in St. Petersburg about bars and breweries. “I am not going to go if other fans are not allowed.”

A limited number of South Florida football fans can make plans to watch college and professional games in person next month, even as the region remains behind the rest of the state in reopening its economy during the coronavirus pandemic.

Gov. Ron DeSantis appeared Monday at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens and pointed to a decrease in positive coronavirus tests as he supported plans to allow 13,000 fans, about 20 percent of capacity, into the stadium for home games of the Miami Dolphins and the University of Miami Hurricanes.

Lewis-Buchanan was hurt during the 2012 NFL rookie camp. He eventually pivoted to a career in social work and community activism for mental health awareness. After joining the Raiders staff this summer, he says life has “come full circle.”

American football is famous for being a full-contact sport. That presents a challenge for trying to keep the coronavirus at bay.

But the NFL is going for it, with some changes.

Gov. Ron DeSantis said it’s time for professional sports teams to play ball again in Florida.

DeSantis, who is still rolling out the first phase of the state’s economic recovery effort amid the coronavirus pandemic, said Wednesday he will lift restrictions so teams would be welcome to train and play games in empty stadiums in Florida.

If you're involved in high school athletics, you know the scene. There's increasing pressure to specialize in a single sport and play it year-round.
