Despite resistance from doctors, the Legislature passed a law this year to expand what health services could be provided by pharmacists. But implementing new rules to carry out the law is drawing fire from physicians who worry about a lack of specifics on what pharmacists can and can’t do.

For years, most pharmacists couldn’t give customers even a clue about an easy way to save money on prescription drugs. But the restraints are coming off.

When the cash price for a prescription is less than what you would pay using your insurance plan, pharmacists will no longer have to keep that a secret.

Most people don't shop for lower prescription drug prices. They should, especially now that there are easier ways to do so.

Since Florida implemented its prescription drug monitoring program four years ago, prescription overdose deaths have dropped by 25 percent. That’s according to a new University of Florida study.

But the new state regulations have also had an unintended effect — people who have a legitimate need for pain medication are having a harder time finding it.

Some Florida lawmakers say the state’s pill mill crackdown has gone too far. Florida used to be known as a pill mill capital but the state cracked down on unscrupulous clinics, leaving legitimate patients to struggle with getting prescriptions filled.

Target will sell its pharmacy and clinic businesses to the drugstore chain CVS Health for about $1.9 billion in a deal that combines the resources of two retailers seeking to polish their health care reputations.

The acquisition allows CVS Health to reach more patients and expand its in-store MinuteClinic brand, which it has been growing aggressively for the past several years. It also gives the nation’s second-largest drugstore chain a retail presence in new markets like Seattle, Denver, and Salt Lake City.

The CVS retail chain is no longer selling tobacco products in its 7,700 stores -- including at more than 700 stores in Florida -- about a month before schedule, according to the South Florida Business Journal. The company, which stands to lose about $2 billion in annual tobacco sales, is also changing its name to CVS Health.

CVS Buying Navarro Pharmacies

The retail giant CVS Caremark has announced plans late Monday to purchase local drug store chain Navarro Discount Pharmacy.

It’s an effort by CVS to tap into the rapidly expanding Hispanic market.

The Rhode Island-based company did not disclose financial details of the deal. Miami Herald business reporter Hannah Sampson says despite the acquisition, the familiar chain will not disappear.

Despite criticism that it would cost the state Medicaid program too much, a bill that would let doctors break plan rules on prescribing passed its final Senate committee on Tuesday, The Florida Current reports.

A federal judge in Brooklyn, N.Y., has ruled that the morning-after pill for emergency contraception must be made available over the counter to girls 16 and under.

The ruling could end a more than decade-long battle over how easy or difficult it should be for teenage girls to obtain emergency contraception. The ruling would also make it easier for older women to obtain the drug because it wouldn't have to be kept behind drugstore counters anymore.
