NFL neurosurgeon talks about the long-term consequences of concussions

From the invisible impact of brain injuries in sports to the overlooked threat of sun exposure, "What's Health" host Dr. Joe Sirven dives into hidden dangers that can change lives in an instant.

"What's Health Got to Do with It?" is a talk program from WJCT in Jacksonville that examines the intersection of health care and daily life.

On this week's program, host Dr. Joe Sirven discusses concussion prevention and treatment with Dr. David Okonowo, director of the Neurotrauma Clinical Trials Center at the University of Pittsburgh and team neurosurgeon for the NFL's Pittsburgh Steelers.

Sirven, a Jacksonville neurologist, and Okonowo delve into how concussions affect the brain, the long-term consequences of head injuries, and how contact sports and technology are evolving to address the concussion crisis.

Later in the program, we discuss the hidden dangers of sun exposure.

From the subtle sign of skin cancer to the risks of tanning, Dr. Robert Brown, a dermatologist at Advanced Dermatology & Cosmetic Surgery in Orange Park, discusses preventative measures of sun exposure.
