A Miami-area beach has been shut down by Florida officials after levels of bacteria from animal intestines were too high.
The Miami Herald reported Thursday people hoping to swim in the ocean around Sunny Isles Beach may need to change plans as the Florida Department of Health shut down an area until further notice.
The department shut down a two-block stretch after samples showed the beach did not meet the recreational water quality standard for enterococci. The bacteria are found in animals' intestines, meaning it could not be safe to swim because there was either too much human or pet feces in the water.
Unsafe enterococci levels had led the department to issue an advisory against swimming in South Beach about two months prior.
