More than a year after being hit with multiple lawsuits alleging Medicare fraud, Ocala-based cardiologist Dr. AsadQamar has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, the Ocala Star-Banner reports.

Qamar, one of the nation’s top billers for Medicare and a target of a U.S. Department of Justice investigation, lists more than $6.8 million in unsecured debt, liabilities and assets in the filing made in federal court with his wife, according to the Star-Banner. Qamar also is banned from Medicare reimbursement, and a bank foreclosure against his medical practices is underway, the Star-Banner reports.

The bankruptcy judge is allowing Qamar to continue operating his businesses, including his Ocala-based Institute of Cardiovascular Excellence. Qamar also filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection fo ICE Holdings PLLC, the parent company of the Ocala clinic and other offices, the Star-Banner reports.
