Vitamin Seller Blasts Fake Doc Claim

The owner of Barry's Vitamins & Herbs in Boca Raton had promised to stop using the words “doctor” and the title of “Dr.” in his store and on his website, the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports.

The agreement came after Palm Beach County Sheriff's detectives said they saw Barry Nevins in his store wearing monogrammed medical scrubs, offering to diagnose customer blood tests, the Sun Sentinel reports. By law, he is only authorized to give advice on nutritional supplements.

But according to the State Attorney's office, 73-year-old Nevins kept advertising himself as “Dr. Barry,” and he now faces a felony count unlicensed practice of health care profession and up to a year in jail, according to the Sun Sentinel.

Originally founded in December 2006 as an independent grassroots publication dedicated to coverage of health issues in Florida, Health News Florida was acquired by WUSF Public Media in September 2012.
