Leon County Judge John Cooper on June 30, 2022, in a screen grab from The Florida Channel.

A former University of Floirda professor surrendered his state medical license in June to end Board of Medicine charges regarding the 2010 death of a patient, The Gainesville Sun reports.

Dr. Harold E. Smith, who also has been disciplined for his own drug addictions, agreed to never apply for another license in Florida, the Sun reports.

The 2010 complaint that led Smith to give up his license stated that he gave increasing doses of Oxycontin to a patient, Alice Tomlinson, even after she showed signs of being overly sedated. She died shortly after being found face down on the floor of her hospital room, according to the Sun.

Originally founded in December 2006 as an independent grassroots publication dedicated to coverage of health issues in Florida, Health News Florida was acquired by WUSF Public Media in September 2012.
