Miami health-care executive Mike Fernandez, who is Gov. Rick Scott's campaign finance director, says he has personally donated $1.25 million to the effort because Scott "believes in good government," the Times/Herald Tallahassee Bureau reports.
Fernandez' donations to the Let's Get to Work Committee, which rise to $1.45 million counting companies affiliated with Fernandez, have nothing to do with the billion-dollar contracts that his companies hold with the state Medicaid program, he said. MBF Healthcare Partners has been doing business with the state since 1989, long before Scott was governor, Fernandez told the Times/Herald.
The question came up on Monday, when the Florida Democratic Party sent out a note that said "it really pays off to be Rick Scott's top campaign donor." That was a reference to the news that Fernandez will host a fundraiser for Scott at his Coral Gables mansion on March 24, for $25,000 a head.
