A University of Florida College of Pharmacy professor is looking at the potentially harmful combination of psychotropic drugs used to treat children on the state’s Medicaid program. Almut Winterstein will conduct the two-year study looking at the effect on children being prescribed multiple drugs by more than one doctor, for disorders from attention deficit hyperactivity disorder to antidepressants, according to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. He said health care providers and parents have been concerned, and little research exists to understand the efficacy or safety of this practice.
