Florida’s inmate population is disproportionately old and unhealthy, making prisons especially vulnerable to the COVID-19 virus. Prison reform advocates want the state to release a small number of inmates who are in poor health or incapacitated and near the end of their sentence. They’d be subject to strict oversight.

It’s called conditional medical release. Other states are doing it. Illinois has released nearly 4,000 inmates. Pennsylvania released about 1,800.

A longtime proponent of medical marijuana filed a measure Friday that would eliminate Florida’s “vertical integration” system requiring state-licensed operators to grow, process and dispense cannabis and related products.

Florida House leaders have rolled out a proposal that would allow patients to smoke medical marijuana, but only after going through what one critic called a “bureaucratic mess of red tape.”

A high-profile effort to repeal the state’s ban on smokable medical marijuana morphed Monday into legislation that, according to the proposal’s author, would be worse for patients than doing nothing at all. 

Lawmakers are being asked to consider two competing proposals surrounding access to dental care. One would allow mid-level practitioners to be licensed, while the other would provide incentives to would-be dentists.

A coalition called Floridians for Dental Access wants the Florida Legislature to allow licenses for dental therapists.

Therapists have more training than a dental hygienist and less training than a dentist. They can perform services like filling cavities and pulling teeth.

Second Bill Filed To End Marijuana Smoking Ban

With Gov. Ron DeSantis backing the issue, Sen. Jeff Brandes, R-St. Petersburg, filed a bill Monday that would eliminate a ban on smoking medical marijuana.

The Florida Senate has passed a measure allowing people to carry guns during a mandatory emergency evacuation without a concealed carry permit. The measure pit some Democrats against one another on the Senate floor Tuesday.

  Proposals by two Republican lawmakers to legalize medical marijuana have a slim chance of passing this legislative session, based on the comments of a Senate committee chairman who helps control the fate of that chamber's measure.

Rep. Greg Steube, R-Sarasota, created a buzz on Tuesday when he filed a bill that would expand Florida's limited medical marijuana law, approved last year but yet to be implemented.
