In less than a week, a landmark battle over who bears responsibility for the U.S. opioid crisis will begin in federal court.

The case involves thousands of plaintiffs at virtually every level of government and defendants from every link in the chain of opioid drug production — from major multinational corporations such as Johnson & Johnson and CVS, right down to individual doctors. And on Oct. 21, the first trial is set to kick off before a judge in the Northern District of Ohio.

MARY LOUISE KELLY, HOST:

CVS Health is looking to create a national network of community medical clinics that will serve as "America's front door to quality health care."

That's the goal, according to a statement by CEO Larry Merlo on his company's deal for Aetna. It's an ambitious one for CVS, a company better known as a quick stop for Tylenol and a Coke.

CVS is now selling a rival, generic version of Mylan's EpiPen at about a sixth of its price, just months after the maker of the life-saving allergy treatment was eviscerated before Congress because of its soaring cost to consumers.

CVS Health Corp., the nation's second-largest drugstore chain, says it will charge $109.99 for a two-pack of the authorized generic version of Adrenaclick, a lesser-known treatment compared to EpiPen, which can cost more than $600.

Pharmacy giant CVS says it will soon make the overdose-reversing drug Naloxone available at its Florida stores without a prescription.

CVS is planning to bring 500 new jobs to Orange County. The Orange County Commission this week approved a $300,000 property tax rebate for Caremark LLC, part of a $1.5 million incentive package from Florida.

Target will sell its pharmacy and clinic businesses to the drugstore chain CVS Health for about $1.9 billion in a deal that combines the resources of two retailers seeking to polish their health care reputations.

The acquisition allows CVS Health to reach more patients and expand its in-store MinuteClinic brand, which it has been growing aggressively for the past several years. It also gives the nation’s second-largest drugstore chain a retail presence in new markets like Seattle, Denver, and Salt Lake City.

Cafecito, bilingual staff, money transfer services, an expanded discount fragrance counter. But wait -- “y más.”

CVS has launched 12 “CVS/pharmacy y más” stores in South Florida. In Miami, Hialeah, Doral, Homestead and Kendall, CVS says it has converted 11 existing locations and added a brand-new store to launch its Hispanic-centric store concept.

This comes less than a year after the Rhode Island-based giant bought Miami-based Navarro Discount Pharmacy, touted as the largest Hispanic-owned drugstore chain in the country.

Pharmacies Limit Legitimate Paid Meds

The state of Florida recently endured a terrible epidemic; prescription drug abuse. Approximately 7 persons died daily in our state from prescription drug overdoses. This was fueled by the proliferation of “pill mills” that dispensed millions of units of oxycodone, carisoprodol, and alprazolam.

Pharmacies were also involved the dispensing of these drugs. Walgreens and CVS Pharmacy were fined tens of millions of dollars by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) for violating rules and regulations for dispensing controlled substances.

The CVS retail chain is no longer selling tobacco products in its 7,700 stores -- including at more than 700 stores in Florida -- about a month before schedule, according to the South Florida Business Journal. The company, which stands to lose about $2 billion in annual tobacco sales, is also changing its name to CVS Health.

Saying it is "the right thing for us to do for our customers and our company to help people on their path to better health," the CEO of CVS Caremark announced Wednesday that the company's 7,600 pharmacies will stop selling cigarettes and tobacco products by Oct. 1.

Larry Merlo also said CVS will try to help those who want to quit smoking with a "robust national smoking cessation program" at its locations.

Moffitt Cancer Center

H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center says that treatment there will no longer be covered as in-network care by AARP Medicare plans as of Jan. 1. After that date, members of Evercare, Secure Horizons and AARP Medicare Complete will have to pay at a higher out-of-network rate, according to a letter published in the Tampa Tribune by Dr. Alan List, Moffitt's CEO and president.

One company that was going to help enroll uninsured Floridians in health insurance through the federal online Marketplace has dropped out in the face of state officials’ continuing hostility to everything about the Affordable Care Act.

Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office

A Delray Beach doctor who signed a lease saying he wouldn’t be opening a pain clinic appears to be running a pain clinic anyway, the Palm Beach Post reports. Dr. Fernando Jimenez has been arrested after nearby businesses tipped off authorities that patients were looking for him to write prescriptions for powerful pain pills.

If you're looking for a deal on prescription drugs or tired of standing in line at the drugstore counter, maybe you'd be inclined to try an online pharmacy.

Perhaps you'd feel better about that choice if the site carried the name of a well-known chain, say, www.walgreen-store.com or www.c-v-s-pharmacy.com.

A Jacksonville man who used and returned about a dozen enemas to a CVS pharmacy was sentenced to 30 months in prison, The Florida Times-Union reports.

Some of the enema kits returned by Ronald Eugene Robinson were sold to other customers, who had no idea the products had been tampered with.

Hundreds of clinics have opened in chain drugstores across the country and more are coming on line every day as the need for primary care grows and delays face those who need access to a doctor, as The Palm Beach Post reports.

The federal government says no more people can enroll in Caremark's SilverScript Medicare prescription plan. The suspension order from CMS comes after a system failure prevented thousands from getting their medicine.
