A 2012 internal investigation found that 48 Florida state employees made mistakes in issuing permits for concealed weapons, security guards and other similar licenses — in some cases not even looking at applications, according to records released this week to The Associated Press.

Concealed Weapons License Put On Hold In State Senate

Feb 16, 2018

A proposal that would allow some concealed-weapons license applications to be approved when background checks have not been completed was put on hold Thursday because of the deadly high-school shooting in Broward County.

The Senate Appropriations Committee had been scheduled to take up the proposal as part of a wide-ranging bill (SB 740) involving the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. The bill was not immediately rescheduled. The 60-day legislative session ends March 9.

While Florida Republicans push measures allowing concealed weapons on college campuses and open carry throughout the state, a Democratic senator wants permit holders to have their papers ready for first responders.

The Florida House passed a bill Thursday allowing gun owners to take their weapons during mandatory emergency evacuations, sending it to Gov. Rick Scott for approval. However, bills allowing guns on university campuses and in public schools face an uncertain future.

When the Legislative session resumes next week, bills targeting speed limit increases, juvenile sentencing and medical tourism will head to floor votes in both chambers, the News Service of Florida reports.

A Senate panel approved a bill this week that would allow teachers and other designated school staff to carry concealed weapons on school campuses, according to the Herald/Times Tallahassee Bureau.
