The sponsor of a ban on texting-while-driving got behind the wheel of a driving simulator to make her point, the Orlando Sentinel reports. Texting while “driving,” State Sen.Nancy Detert, R-Venice, hit two deer. Similar measures have failed in previous sessions; this time around, both the House and Senate bills have just one more committee to pass before heading to the floor.
Meanwhile, the Senate Health Policy Committee approved all 12 bills it considered Thursday morning. The measures include creating an award for excellence for cancer centers; extending lawsuit protection to dental professionals who provide care at free clinics; and adding licensed psychologists to the list of providers who are shielded from insurers’ claims of overpayment.
The committee also approved SB 1302, which would allow medical institutions to provide malpractice insurance for visiting physicians participating in medical or surgical training instead of relying on them to bring their own coverage.
