Jail Blocks Inquiry on Scalding Death

About a month ago, the Miami Herald reported that a mentally ill inmate at the Dade Correctional Institution died at the hands of jail guards, deliberately scalded to death in the shower. The Herald also reported that no autopsy report was ever filed, the 911 call file was destroyed and witnesses were not interviewed.

Ever since, reporters' efforts to obtain information and interview witnesses have been blocked. Inmates who said they were willing to talk to investigators say they have been threatened with reprisal.

A nurse who asked not to be identified told the Herald that when she examined the inmate's body, it was so hot the temperature exceeded the range on her thermometer.

Originally founded in December 2006 as an independent grassroots publication dedicated to coverage of health issues in Florida, Health News Florida was acquired by WUSF Public Media in September 2012.
