Bay Gardens Retirement Village in Tampa no longer has a license to operate as an assisted living facility. As the Tampa Bay Times reports, the facility lost that license in 2010 after years of endangering and neglecting patients. But as a review of public records and interviews with former tenants by the Times shows, Hillsborough County continued to pay for people to live there, even though many of them were sick and needed more care than Bay Gardens was able or allowed to provide.

Originally founded in December 2006 as an independent grassroots publication dedicated to coverage of health issues in Florida, Health News Florida was acquired by WUSF Public Media in September 2012.
