Private Psychologists Help Win ‘Gifted’ Status

Parents who can afford it are spending $500 to get their child a private psychological evaluation for the “gifted” program in the Miami-Dade schools, enhancing their chances of getting in, according to the Miami Herald (Editor’s note: Readers may encounter a paywall).

The school system, which offered the tests for free last year to more than 8,000 children, says a private evaluation doesn’t offer any advantage in placement. But the data suggest it does.

Originally founded in December 2006 as an independent grassroots publication dedicated to coverage of health issues in Florida, Health News Florida was acquired by WUSF Public Media in September 2012.
