Dr. Larry Kawa, a Boca Raton orthodontist and big-time Republican fund-raiser, is paying for a dinner on Thursday for hundreds of African Americans aimed at recruiting them to the conservative cause.

Several black conservative leaders, including former U.S. Rep. Allen West and former Lt. Gov. Jennifer Carroll, are scheduled to be there.

Kawa, who founded a PAC called American Courage, said he's paying for everything himself so that the event won't be tied to the Republican party, the Palm Beach Post reports.

Originally founded in December 2006 as an independent grassroots publication dedicated to coverage of health issues in Florida, Health News Florida was acquired by WUSF Public Media in September 2012.
