Capitol: Eye War Over?

South Florida Sun-Sentinel

State senators voted unanimously for a bill that would expand prescribing powers for optometrists, the Associated Press reports. If the bill is signed into law, it would end a decades-long battle between optometrists and ophthalmologists.

In other legislative news:

  • A measure that would end the insurance coverage disparity between oral and IV cancer drugs passed in the Senate without opposition, the Miami Herald reports.
  • A requirement that an infant born during a botched abortion be transported to a hospital was unanimously approved by a House committee, the Palm Beach Post reports.
  • A ban on Internet cafes, which would also shutter senior arcades, passed the Senate, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports. A similar bill passed in the House next week, and now the measure is headed to Gov. Rick Scott.

Originally founded in December 2006 as an independent grassroots publication dedicated to coverage of health issues in Florida, Health News Florida was acquired by WUSF Public Media in September 2012.
