By the end of October, we have to raise $25,000 from our readers to win an equal amount in matching funds from a foundation. The $50,000 total is enough to pay for 100 original investigative and breaking news stories next year, two a week.
A few dozen of you have made tax-deductible donations so far totaling $3,650, and thank you for that! We gladly list names on the scroll bar in the center of the home page, or will keep you anonymous if you prefer.
But at that rate we will fall far short of the goal.Thousands of you subscribe and thousands more are daily readers and twitter followers. We don't have enough staff or volunteers to call each of you and put you on the spot, but we know who you are.
Don't be a free-rider, hoping others will step up and fill the role that is rightfully yours. Good, solid reporting and editing don't come for free.
