A senior U.S. Justice Department official is leading a discussion in Miami on the growing problem of human trafficking and finding ways to combat it.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein is scheduled to appear at Thursday's meeting. Also planning to attend are acting Miami U.S. Attorney Benjamin Greenberg and members of the South Florida Human Trafficking Task Force.

The task force's websitesays human trafficking frequently involves forcing people to have sexual encounters or making them work against their will in what is essentially modern-day slavery. The task force is made up of several federal agencies, the Miami-Dade Police Department and others.

Miami-Dade prosecutors said last year that their human trafficking unit has handled more than 400 state cases since it was formed in 2012.
