Chiropractor Sentenced for Accident Fraud

A Parkland chiropractor and a Palm Springs chiropractic receptionist were each sentenced to four years in federal prison, for their part in a massive car accident fraud scheme, the South Florida Sun Sentineland Palm Beach Post report.

According to the Sun Sentinel, Lawrence Schechtman, 46, pleaded guilty to four counts of mail fraud and one count of mail fraud conspiracy between 2009 and 2012. The chiropractor signed off on treatment claims for people who staged accidents in Palm Beach and Miami-Dade Counties.

In West Palm Beach, clinic receptionist Sircy Sacerio, who also is known as Sircy Santos, was sentenced to four years in prison, the Post reports. Both she and Schechtman also were ordered to pay restitution.

These cases are part of “Operation Sledgehammer,” a state and federal fraud investigation that so far has led to charges against 92 individuals, the Post reports.

Originally founded in December 2006 as an independent grassroots publication dedicated to coverage of health issues in Florida, Health News Florida was acquired by WUSF Public Media in September 2012.
