Hospital Firm HMA Fights Takeover

Health Management Associates Inc., a Naples-based hospital chain that owns about two dozen hospitals in Florida, announced it has hired high-profile advisers in an attempt to prevent a hostile takeover by its largest shareholder.

Bloomberg News reports that HMA hired Morgan Stanley and Weil, Gotshal & Manges to help prevent Glenview Capital Management from increasing its HMA shares from 14.6 percent to 25 percent.

HMA’s stock is soaring on rumors of the buyout.

Originally founded in December 2006 as an independent grassroots publication dedicated to coverage of health issues in Florida, Health News Florida was acquired by WUSF Public Media in September 2012.
