The nation's second-largest drugstore chain says Florida's lawsuit alleging that it helped fuel the state's opioid crisis "is without merit."

Florida Blue has teamed up with Walgreens to offer free flu shots every Thursday in October from 10 a.m. until noon on a first-come, first-served basis.

Walgreens is teaming up with Florida Hospital Tampa to put health clinics inside drug stores around the Tampa Bay area.

Target will sell its pharmacy and clinic businesses to the drugstore chain CVS Health for about $1.9 billion in a deal that combines the resources of two retailers seeking to polish their health care reputations.

The acquisition allows CVS Health to reach more patients and expand its in-store MinuteClinic brand, which it has been growing aggressively for the past several years. It also gives the nation’s second-largest drugstore chain a retail presence in new markets like Seattle, Denver, and Salt Lake City.

CVS Health has agreed to pay a $22 million settlement for the unlawful distribution of prescription drugs. The U.S. Attorney’s Office reached the settlement after a federal crackdown at two Sanford pharmacies.

The investigation was part of a larger crackdown three years ago on Florida’s pill mills. U.S Drug Enforcement Administration agents talked with pharmacy employees and found that among other things, customers would come in asking for oxycodone using slang street terms.

Pharmacies Limit Legitimate Paid Meds

The state of Florida recently endured a terrible epidemic; prescription drug abuse. Approximately 7 persons died daily in our state from prescription drug overdoses. This was fueled by the proliferation of “pill mills” that dispensed millions of units of oxycodone, carisoprodol, and alprazolam.

Pharmacies were also involved the dispensing of these drugs. Walgreens and CVS Pharmacy were fined tens of millions of dollars by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) for violating rules and regulations for dispensing controlled substances.

A consumer and labor watchdog has filed a complaint with Florida’s Department of Health, targeting the way Walgreens pharmacists talk to customers.

Change to Win said they’re concerned about a new pharmacy layout in Walgreens stores called “Well Experience.” This new format removes a pharmacist from behind the counter and places them in a public part of the store.

Nell Geiser, a spokeswoman with Change to Win, said it’s not necessarily a bad thing to have pharmacists closer to consumers.

Saying it is "the right thing for us to do for our customers and our company to help people on their path to better health," the CEO of CVS Caremark announced Wednesday that the company's 7,600 pharmacies will stop selling cigarettes and tobacco products by Oct. 1.

Larry Merlo also said CVS will try to help those who want to quit smoking with a "robust national smoking cessation program" at its locations.

VA Cuts Paperwork, Offers Flu Shot Options

Dec 3, 2013

Veterans in Florida can now get a flu shot at any of more than 800 Walgreens locations and the drug store will electronically forward their immunization record to the VA.

It's a pilot program being tried out in the Veterans Integrated Service Network 8 (VISN8) which includes all of Florida, southern Georgia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. It requires no paper record, no remembering at your next VA health care appointment.

One company that was going to help enroll uninsured Floridians in health insurance through the federal online Marketplace has dropped out in the face of state officials’ continuing hostility to everything about the Affordable Care Act.

A jury has decided that a Walgreens pharmacy should pay $1.38 million to an Atlantic Beach patient who was injured by a prescription overdose, the Florida Times-Union reports. According to testimony, the patient’s prescription of Phenergan for food poisoning was written with a dose four times too high.

If you're looking for a deal on prescription drugs or tired of standing in line at the drugstore counter, maybe you'd be inclined to try an online pharmacy.

Perhaps you'd feel better about that choice if the site carried the name of a well-known chain, say, www.walgreen-store.com or www.c-v-s-pharmacy.com.

Walgreens has agreed to pay an $80-million fine following an investigation by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration into the company’s dispensing practices, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports.  The agreement was reached after the DEA banned a Florida distribution center from dispensing controlled substances, including oxycodone.  Six Florida Walgreens were targeted in the DEA probe.

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration is attempting to revoke the licenses of six Walgreens pharmacies to prescribe controlled substances after an inspection raised questions about existing inventory.  A distribution center investigated by the DEA also faces possible revocation, according to the Naples Daily News
