In a case stemming from a fatal shooting in Broward County, the Florida Supreme Court on Tuesday waded into a debate about whether police officers should be able to use the state’s “stand your ground” self-defense law.

Florida Democratic legislators are using an obscure state law to try to force the Republican-controlled Legislature to repeal the state's contentious "stand your ground law."

Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri spoke at a press conference Tuesday to update the public about a recent controversial "stand your ground" case.

The news conference was supposed to include representatives from The Upper Pinellas County Ministerial Alliance and NAACP Clearwater, but they called before the event saying they would not attend. Gualtieri addressed the media alone.

Court Upholds 'Stand Your Ground' Shift

A South Florida appeals court has upheld the constitutionality of a controversial change to the state’s ‘stand your ground” self-defense law --- but also might have set the stage for a debate at the Florida Supreme Court about how the change should apply in some cases.

A bill making changes to Florida’s Stand Your Ground law is now headed to the Senate floor, after passing its last committee Thursday. One of its ardent supporters is Marissa Alexander—the Jacksonville woman who faced 60 years in prison for firing a warning shot in an alleged domestic dispute.

A new bill under consideration by the Florida Legislature would make it easier for defendants to use the "Stand Your Ground" defense when faced with use of force charges. 

For years, Florida laws have  had provisions for self-defense immunity, protecting people who use force in self-defense from being prosecuted. There are certain restrictions on where and when you are justified in using various kind of force in self-defense.

Pasco County Sheriff’s investigators will not file charges against Lenny Linardos, 46, for Monday’s shooting of Jamie Velez, according to the Tampa Bay Times.

They say Linardos, owner of Holiday’s West Coast Spine and Injury Center, shot Velez in self defense, after the 33-year-old confronted the chiropractor at his clinic.
