Sandy Hook

The father of a Newtown, Conn., girl who was killed in the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting has died in an apparent suicide. Newtown Police say 49-year-old Jeremy Richman was found dead early Monday morning, not far from his office.

"This is a heartbreaking event for the Richman family and the Newtown Community as a whole; the police department's prayers are with the Richman family right now, and we ask that the family be given privacy in this most difficult time," said Lt. Aaron Bahamonde.

On a recent Friday at Florida Atlantic University, Deb Del Vecchio-Scully began a lecture on trauma by asking an auditorium full of therapists to stand up and shake their bodies out like rag dolls.

"Do it with me," she said, as the room giggled and jiggled.

It was a light moment with a serious purpose. Del Vecchio-Scully explained that this was just one technique the therapists could offer a patient to help deal with the discomfort of traumatic stress.

In the wake of the Newtown, Conn., school shooting, the sheriff in Palm Beach County wants to launch a violence-prevention unit that includes a hotline staffed by deputies and mental health personnel, the Palm Beach Post reports.

Health policy consultant Paul Gionfriddo writes that Florida has been at or near the bottom of mental health spending for years. While other states are walking back mental-health cuts in the wake of the Sandy Hook massacre, Gionfriddo says, Gov. Rick Scott requested no new dollars for mental health services.

Columnist Carl Hiaasen writes that Florida Atlantic University should keep professor James Tracy, who raised a question into whether the Sandy Hook elementary school massacre actually happened. He does, after all, teach "Culture of Conspiracy" classes.

It's still early days since the massacre of 20 children and seven adults at Sandy Hook elementary school in Newton, CT.  President Barack Obama spoke of the need for "change," and while many assume he means beefing up statutes on the most dangerous firearms, he didn't specify what he meant.
