Money Could Go To Trauma Centers After Mass Shootings

Senate Minority Leader Oscar Braynon wants to create a $10 million program that would reimburse trauma centers for care provided to victims of mass shootings, and Senate President Joe Negron said he will support the effort.

With House Republican leaders looking to make major health-care changes, a key panel Monday approved proposals that would erase limits on the numbers of trauma centers in the state and revamp parts of the Medicaid program.


  Orlando Regional Medical Center got 44 patients from the Pulse night club shooting.

It’s a Level 1 Trauma Center, and medical staff there were pushed to the limit as they dealt with the onslaught of patients coming from the Pulse nightclub shooting that happened just three blocks away. Medical staff and patients recounted the events of early Sunday morning.

The woman who in 2002 paved the way for U.S. hospitals to charge trauma response fees says she never imagined that it would become "a back-door way for some hospitals to profiteer."

The Florida Department of Health is proposing a new formula for determining the need for new hospital trauma centers, the News Service of Florida reports. 

The scoring system will factor in population, transport times to hospitals and community support, and whether there are Level 1 trauma centers in the area that might lose their patient base.
