Dr. Kiran Patel

Local philanthropist and entrepreneur Dr. Kiran Patel has invested $60 million dollars in a medical device company that plans to relocate its headquarters to Tampa.

Nova Southeastern University held it’s 20th annual Celebration of Excellence Ceremony Saturday night. But this year, the two guests of honor - and the first Indian Americans to have a U.S. medical school named after them - have made NSU history.

The husband and wife duo from Tampa, Drs. Kiran C. Patel and Pallavi Patel, announced an expansion of a donation totaling $225 million. This makes them the largest contributors in the university’s history.

Care Point Insurance Co., based in New Jersey,  won a bankruptcy auction for Universal Health Care Group in St. Petersburg, pending approval by state authorities. Care Point's bid was $33.25 million, all cash, according to Harley Riedel, Universal's bankruptcy attorney.

A company controlled by Dr. Kiran Patel actually offered more money -- $36.5 million -- but it would have been paid over time.
