The families of four Florida children with special health-care needs have filed a challenge to a new state process that removed them from a program providing services to medically fragile kids.

On Thursday, attorneys for the families filed an administrative challenge to the Florida Department of Health's process, contending that the agency has been screening youngsters out of the Children's Medical Services Network without accepting public input or following other rule-making requirements.

 The Duval County Health Department has been quietly working on problems listed in a scathing, year-old audit that never was formally released to the public, the Florida Times-Union reports.

The expansion of Medicaid managed care is the reason for the elimination of 85 state jobs at the Florida Department of Health in Polk County, the Lakeland Ledger reports. Among the positions that will be eliminated are registered nurses, advanced registered nurse practitioners, licensed practical nurses and health support workers. According to the Ledger, 28 of the positions are vacant.   

The Florida Department of Health's proposed rule for the cultivation and sale of a certain type of low-THC medical marijuana garnered a slew of suggested changes and complaints during a Monday workshop in Tallahassee, the News Service of Florida reports.

Officials from the Florida Department of Health will look to negotiations among surgeons, hospital lawyers and the Florida Department of Health's top attorney as they revise the rule on new trauma centers, the News Service of Florida reports.

The talks, led by former Supreme Court justice Kenneth Bell, are intended to resolve the disagreement over which applications for new centers are approved.

Doctors in Trouble Keep Practicing

Medical professionals in Florida hang onto their licenses and continue practicing as the state grapples with a lengthy disciplinary process that can take years, according to an analysis by the Florida Center for Investigative Reporting.

Between 2010 and 2012, it took the Florida Board of Medicine an average 434 days to resolve charges of misconduct against doctors, nurses and other health care workers, according to Florida Department of Health records.

In Florida, the number of cases of food poisoning linked to Foster Farms brand chicken is now four, the state Department of Health announced Thursday. None of the patients had to be hospitalized, DOH said.

Three of the patients were in Miami-Dade and one in Brevard, DOH said. The agency said late today that the patients were: a 1-year-old baby, children ages 7 and 15, and an 88-year-old. There were two males and two females, a spokesman said via e-mail.

Public health workers will be asking about 300 people for blood samples amid a dengue fever outbreak that has sickened 18, the Palm Beach Post reports. Workers from the Florida Department of Health in Martin County will knock on doors at more than 700 homes to figure out how widespread the mosquito-borne virus outbreak is.

The AIDS Healthcare Foundation has filed a workplace safety complaint with the Florida Department of Health, accusing a South Florida-based company of not doing enough to protect its adult film actors, News Service of Florida reports. After successfully lobbying for a California law that mandates condom use in adult films, the group says the adult film industry is  moving production to Florida, a state without such a law.

Dr. Michael Addair Tarver’s license has been suspended by an emergency order from the Florida Department of Health, the Ocala Star-Banner reports (paywall in effect). According to DOH records, the dentist allegedly tried to cover up two separate incidents involving 4-year-old patients having a reaction to anesthesia.

The University of Florida program that provides health insurance to low-income children with special health needs will get $18 million in state funding to expand coverage, UF announced. Pediatric Integrated Care System, also known as Ped-I-Care, will double the number of counties it serves with the Florida Department of Health grant.


New lawsuits have been filed by attorney Jack Scarola, who says independent tests he ordered found radioactive material at almost all of the sites near a pediatric cancer cluster in the Acreage, WPTV TV/NewsChannel 5 reports. The Florida Department of Health conducted its own tests in 2010 and disputes the cancer cluster, but officials say they’re willing to take another look.

The Florida Department of Health, which is in charge of Florida's prescription drug database, held a workshop Monday morning to discuss tightening rules on who has access to it following the leak of thousands of names of patients who were treated at a pain clinic in Volusia County.

Criticism of the Department of Health is growing over its release of private prescription information on  3,300 patients to federal and state agencies, and from there to defense attorneys involved in a Volusia County drug case.

The Florida Department of Health has imposed emergency restrictions on an oral surgeon  accused of sexually assaulting patients while they were sedated, the Pensacola News Journal reports. The public complaint, which says one of the patients was 16 years old, notes staff members saw that the dentist was touching the patient and was “sexually aroused.” 

The Department of Health gave its approval to two HCA-owned trauma centers on the same day it held a workshop to discuss the impact of such facilities on the community.

More than 50 people voluntarily gave up their licenses and the Florida Department of Health Board of Massage Therapy revoked the licenses of 19 other massage therapists last week. Many of them got phony credentials from the Florida College  of Natural Health, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports.
