A new, permanent hospital building is being built in Marathon for Florida Keys residents.

The Fisherman's Community Hospital was flattened by Hurricane Irma just in September 2017. It's owned by Baptist Health South Florida. Ever since, the hospital has been operating out of tents, and then a year later, portable buildings.

Baptist Health South Florida says it will collaborate with New York-based Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center for the new $400-million Miami Cancer Institute scheduled to open later this year, the Miami Herald reports.

Baptist Health South Florida lost $94.2 million for the fiscal year that ended in September, the South Florida Business Journal reports. The non-profit health system was hurt by losses on investments and higher costs for supplies, malpractice and insurance, according to the Business Journal.

According to the Miami Herald, Baptist Health South Florida is enjoying tax exempt-status and raking in millions as it makes its network unavailable to many low- and middle-income patients.

The Baptist brand of health care is coming to Miami Beach.  

The city planning board voted 6-1 to give Baptist the green light to build an urgent care center at 709 Alton Road.

Those are the comments of Baptist Health South Florida CEO Brian Keeley. Baptist Health is the largest faith-based non-profit health system in South Florida. It delivers $2 billion of health care to South Florida through seven hospitals, more than a dozen urgent care centers and various other specialty health centers. The Baptist business has more than 1,700 beds and serves more than 1 million patients per year. Keeley has been with Baptist for more than 30 years.

Baptist Health South Florida is giving $5 million for health and wellness programs at the new Patricia and Phillip Frost Museum of Science being built in downtown Miami.

The Baptist Health People & Science Gallery will be located inside the museum. Some of the funding also will pay for transportation for Miami-Dade County public school students to visit the museum.

Museum President and CEO Gillian Thomas says the gallery will teach people "how to make better choices for a healthy life."

Earnings at Miami-based Baptist Health South Florida improved in its fiscal third quarter, the South Florida Business Journal reports.

The nonprofit hospital and health care provider reported $165.1 million in earnings for the quarter that ended June 30. That’s up $8.1 million for the same period a year ago, the Business Journal reports.

A partnership is being considered between the region's biggest hospital system, Baptist Health South Florida, and Palm Beach County's Bethesda Health network, according to the Miami Herald and South Florida Business Journal.

The CEO of Mount Sinai Medical Center says he's willing to reveal the actual contractual prices that his hospital receives from Aetna, Florida Blue and other insurers -- and dares other hospitals to do the same.

Steve Sonenreich made the pledge during a show on WLRN 91.3-FM in Miami with host Tom Hudson, the Miami Herald reports. 

Baptist Health South Florida is giving nearly all of its 15,000 employees a $1,000 bonus to help compensate for the higher Social Security tax now taken out of paychecks, the Miami Herald reports.
