At least 20 states, including Florida, already have consent laws for this practice. Montana’s governor signed a bill in April, Missouri has legislation that needs the governor’s signature and Ohio lawmakers are also considering it.

Zivin co-authored a study published in 2021 that found that suicidal thoughts and behavior among commercially insured U.S. individuals before, during and after pregnancy were rising. The rates were low, but they increased among those with anxiety or depression from 1 per 10,000 in 2006 to almost 3 per 10,000 in 2017.
