Cinnamon from a manufacturer in Ecuador is the “likely source” of high levels of lead found in recalled pouches of applesauce puree linked to illnesses in at least 34 children in 22 states.

Brands include WanaBana brand apple cinnamon fruit puree and Schnucks and Weis brand cinnamon applesauce pouches. The products were sold in stores and online.

Some 9.2 million lead pipes carry water into homes across the U.S., and Florida has nearly 1.16 million of them. according to a new EPA survey is dictating how billions of dollars to find and replace those pipes are spent.

President Joe Biden said in his State of the Union address that federal funds will pay to replace lead pipes in hundreds of thousands of schools and child care centers. In the meantime, schools are dealing with high lead levels now.

Lead is regularly found in vintage items more than 40 years old, but also in many new, cheaply made dollar-store goods. Children are especially susceptible to lead-poisoning even at low levels.
