Health and legal experts say the ruling by a deeply divided court does nothing to protect pregnant women in other states with strict abortion bans, and could prompt those states to push back more on the federal law.

The federal law is called the Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act, and it requires doctors to stabilize or treat any patient who shows up at an emergency room.

Idaho's "Defense of Life Act" would would make it a crime for "every person who performs or attempts to perform an abortion," even when the woman's health is greatly endangered.

At least two hospitals are ending labor and delivery services, with one citing the state’s “legal and political climate” and noting that “recruiting replacements will be extraordinarily difficult” as doctors leave.

The federal agency that oversees Medicaid suggested Idaho wasn't trying hard enough to reach beneficiaries before letting their coverage lapse. Consumer advocates fear that could happen again.
