A 30-year-old man living in a dormitory at the University of Central Florida apparently planned to kill other students by sounding the fire alarm, then shooting them when they went outside. But when police responded quickly to a 911 call from one of his roommates, the Orlando Sentinel reports, James Oliver Seevakumaran turned the gun on himself.
Police say they found an assault weapon, a handgun, hundreds of rounds of ammunition and homemade explosives. They gave no motive for Monday’s shooting, and Seevakumaran had no criminal history, the Tampa Bay Times reports.
On his Facebook page, the Times reports, he described himself as a “lazy genius” and wrote “I think I might be socially awkward." UCF said there was no indication he had received any counseling services, and he had no student conduct issues, the Sentinel reports. About 500 students were evacuated from the seven-story tower in the middle of the night.
In a separate incident, a seventh-grader with no history of disciplinary problems was arrested after bringing weapons to school in his backpack. Police identified one of the weapons as a semi-automatic machine pistol that was included in the 1994 federal Assault Weapons Ban, the Orlando Sentinel reports.
