Scott Signs Funding for Everglades, Disabled

Gov. Rick Scott, flanked by representatives of environmental groups and the sugar industry,  signed Everglades-restoration legislation Tuesday intended to raise millions of dollars through a sugar-cane tax and state contributions over the next decade, the Sun-Sentinelreported.

On Wednesday, Scott moved on to Jacksonville to celebrate the first funding in eight years to reduce the waiting list of those who want and need home and community services that help them stay out of institutions, the governor's officesaid in a release. In addition to the $36 million for that, the Legislature appropriated $40 million to take care of the debt on the program, which is part of the Agency for Persons With Disabilities.

Originally founded in December 2006 as an independent grassroots publication dedicated to coverage of health issues in Florida, Health News Florida was acquired by WUSF Public Media in September 2012.
