Repeat Offender: Chiropractor Charged with Fraud

A Pembroke Pines chiropractor who was allowed to keep practicing after pleading guilty in the 1980s to defrauding insurance companies is in trouble again, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports. This time, David Hirschenson is accused of illegally chasing down accident victims to offer them medical services.

Meanwhile, radiation oncology providers in northwest Florida have agreed to settle charges that they billed Medicare, Medicaid and TRICARE for treatments that were not supervised by a physician, or in some cases, not even performed. According to a news release from the U.S. Department of Justice, the settlement will cost the Pensacola doctors, hospitals and clinics $3.5 million, with about $600,000 going to the former employee who filed the whistleblower lawsuit.

Originally founded in December 2006 as an independent grassroots publication dedicated to coverage of health issues in Florida, Health News Florida was acquired by WUSF Public Media in September 2012.
